UACON, Candelaria, Zambales—It was effectively a trip down memory lane. As old folks winnowed and pounded palay and cooked rice delicacies, the youngsters milled about—taking in new sights and savoring unfamiliar smells and sounds: the triple beat of pestles on mortar; brown sugar in coconut milk bubbling in clay pots; the acrid scent of wood fire; and the hint of sweetness in fresh grains.

This was Laruk-Laruk Fiesta, circa 2012, an event organized by Uacon Cove Resort and Residents Association (Ucrra). Never mind that the traditional farm festival has been transplanted to a beachside venue where the tang of sea air replaced the smell of drying hay.

Association President Helen Grace Bolos said the festival was meant to revive the long-lost tradition of Candelarians when villagers gathered for thanksgiving after harvest and prepared their evening merienda of laruk-laruk (rice crisps) and tinupak (rice cakes) while entertaining friends and relatives.

This frame used to be in the front hall, but it was black. I just recently spray-painted it white, which I like here WAY better. I made little Roo paint that picture for me...didn't he do a GREAT job? He's so talented, and only 2 1/2! lol. I bought the side dishes 2 for 50 cents...they work great for key-holders....and the shelf I bought for $10 at winners....perfect together I think!! i've seen a ton of those cake pan things on pinterest they are all spray painted the same color though, so a wee bit different than yours, but isn't spray paint awesome?? i looove it. as i'm sure you've noticed. you can pretty much re-do anything with it haha. but it looks good! i can't wait to have a house to re-do! 5 years ago I married a wonderful man and we now have two adorable boys. I have a degree in psychology, waiting to start my masters, and my husband recently graduated and is working in the financial industry.
