Criminal canines not all that uncommon

There was an odd scraping sound from the kitchen and the clatter of a pan hitting the floor.

I went in to investigate, knowing full well what I was going to find.

Sure enough, a brown and white springer spaniel, one foot holding down a cooling pot of baked beans, glanced up at me without lifting his head.

“Are you kidding me?” I asked him.

Mid-gulp, he wagged his tail briefly.

I reached down and snatched away both pot and lid.

He sat back on his haunches, pleased with himself, and licked his furry mouth to catch the last remnants of baked bean sauce.

An hour or two after we had finished dinner, the pan of beans had been on the back burner of a cold stove. Balancing on his hind legs, one paw resting on the edge of the stove, Charlie had apparently swiped it off with his other paw with ease, supplementing his own dinner with the remainder of ours.

Carol Chargot: Old-fashioned upside-down cake's a snap
Cool in pan 10 minutes. Invert onto plate and serve warm. I love old-fashioned upside-down cakes. Two favorites are cherry and pear versions. A few weeks ago, I happened on a stash of old recipes and -- in a "try it or trash it" mood -- came upon a ...
