A poll has revealed the nation’s ignorance of the Christmas story: 37 respondents thought the first person to visit the baby Jesus was Santa. I can’t say I am surprised. Close questioning of my four-year-old, just before his first Nativity play, revealed that he thought the star guided the wise men to see Spider-Man. And my older son announced to his father and me last week that faith in God was “stupid”, although he does believe in Father Christmas, aliens, hobbits, the Tooth Fairy and his dad’s tale about once seeing a unicorn.
I blame the parents. I have been slack about church attendance, with the result my children are budding heathens. Their school’s study of comparative religion means their knowledge of Hanukkah or Diwali is often greater than their grasp of Christian festivals. So my New Year resolution is to kneel in a pew more often. I don’t mind if my children don’t believe in God, but I do mind if they don’t know what they don’t believe in.
