There are things parents need to know about the latest popular drugs and extreme measures that teens are willing to go to in search of a cheap thrill and short-lived high. These methods are dangerous and can lead to hospitalization, heart failure and even death. Parents need to be alerted and aware of these new drug experimentation methods so they can be on the lookout for signs that their own children might be partaking in one of these new popular trends.  Keep in mind, these are very extreme and not your average “share a joint in the john” experimentations like when we were kids. Just one attempt at any of these more daring methods can have devastating and long lasting consequences.

Bath Salts Stimulants (like cocaine or amphetamines)

Bath salts, commonly known for soothing the skin when added to bath water, are being smoked, snorted, inhaled and injected by teens in search of a high. They were completely legal and sold over the counter to all aged kids until their widespread use and dangerous consequences resulted in 38 states banning them. Bath salts contain manmade chemicals like mephedrone and methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV), also known as substituted cathinones. Both drugs are derivitives of khat, an organic stimulant found in Arab and East African countries and have been banned in the United States by the US Drug Enforcement Administration. Medical professionals claim that these compounds are more powerful and addictive than crack, heroin, cocaine or methamphetamine.
