What started with Juanita Boggs and a 14 year-old boy helping her set out milk carton luminaries on Donegal Drive 35 years ago has grown into a citywide Christmas attraction.
Candy Cane Lane festivities have become so big that the Southside neighborhood is working with the city to devise a route to avoid traffic buildup on Everhart Road. Traffic on Everhart is even heavier this year due to construction on South Staples Street.
Last year's parade was the largest in the event's history, routing through Everhart The city received several complaints from the public about the traffic and a large amount of police officers assisted with traffic flow.
After meeting with the city Monday, the Candy Cane Lane event committee has decided to go back to the basics with Santa Claus making his way down two and a half streets. The new route will start on Killarmet Drive, head onto South Shea Parkway and end on McAlpin Drive.
Candy Cane Lane has expanded from Donegal Drive onto several streets in the Schanen Estates neighborhood during the past three decades drawing crowds numbering in the thousands each December. The Candy Cane Lane committee starts making plans, costumes and decorations as early as July. For the first two decades the Christmas event had other names including Winter Wonderland or Holiday Lights with Schanen Hights. It wasn't until 2002 when one resident on Donegal Drive, Evelyn Rock, made a flier calling the event Candy Cane Lane after neighbors started lining their streets with small candy canes.
