The number of people without jobs in Northeast Florida plunged again in October, falling to a non-adjusted 7.7 percent, the lowest it’s been since December 2008.

Numbers from the state show that unemployment in Baker, Clay, Duval, Nassau and St. Johns counties was two full percentage points lower than it was at this time last year and half a percentage point lower than last month.

A report out from the state’s Department of Economic Opportunity showed Baker County with the lowest rate and Duval County the highest in the five-county area. The overall number is below the state average of 8.2 percent and close to the national figure of 7.5 percent.

University of North Florida economist Paul Mason cautioned that there might be a darker lining to that silver jobs cloud, however.

Although the numbers are up year-over-year, he said there were fewer jobs (232) and fewer people in the workforce (4,029) than there were a month ago.

“We lost a portion of our labor force,” Mason said. “Many of the people who were unemployed left the workforce. That results from people moving out of town or they’ve become discouraged workers. So even though unemployment rate went down, it’s not good news.
