'Arrow' React: Sleeping With the Enemy... Literally

Arrow, as she's the female version of Stephen Amell ’s Oliver Queen/Arrow. Last night’s “Muse of Fire” delivered our first look at the mob boss’s daughter, and the final product was a little underwhelming. But before you raise your voice in disagreement, here me out. Let’s back up.

When we last saw our hooded vigilante, he was getting some much needed mother/son bonding time at a diner, and while he still has some trouble remembering family commitments it seems like he got through to his mom. Moira explained to Thea that they really need to cut Oliver some slack after his five years away. The time on the island changed him, and maybe that’s not such a bad thing. I mean, think about it: five years is a long time, and if you haven’t changed in that time, no matter where you are or what you’re doing, something is wrong. We all change and (hopefully) grow as time goes on.

The New General Store: the original general store

Growing up on long island, we went to this general store...with the screen door slamming, the coke cooler on the porch, we rode our bikes to get popsicles and our neighbors who had horses, rode down and tied up on the posts to get the newspapers for their dad, check the bulletin board for babysitting jobs...my brother remembers that they had the best penny candy at the counter. i remember this as a center of our community, a place where neighbors gathered, news shared, a place that kids went to when ice cream was a treat...this is the spirit of the new general store, where friends and neighbors gather a couple of times a year to have lunch or a cup of cider, to gather by the river and watch the swans in spring, or by the fire in fall to catch up on what's happening...a place to see old friends and meet new ones. and its also a place to be in touch on line with our events, local products for sale, and a way to connect....

Homeless Science Whiz To Attend State of the Union Address ...

Seventeen-year-old Samantha Garvey is homeless.  She’s also a semifinalist for the Intel national science competition. And now, she’ll be going to the State of the Union address.

Garvey, who has been living with her family in a Long Island homeless shelter, just found out last week that she was among the 300 semifinalist for the $100,000 Intel prize.  The Associated Press reports that the budding marine biologist had spent, “… more than two years researching the effects of the Asian short crab on the mussel population in a salt marsh on Long Island, east of New York City.”

Since it was reported last week by the Associated Press that the science whiz was living in a shelter, things have begun looking up. As we told you on Babble , people stepped in to help move her family into a rent-subsidized three-bedroom house.  They had been evicted from their previous home after Garvey’s mother was out of work after a car accident and her father, a cab driver, couldn’t cover the bills alone.
