Here’s one more reason to periodically step away from the keyboard during your work day: It may help ward off munchies.

Research suggests walking can help you fight the urge to grab a handful of snack-sized Twixes from the office candy jar, reports ScienceDaily.com .

In a recent study published in the journal Appetite , University of Exeter researchers placed 78 regular chocolate-eaters in a simulated work environment and gave them either an easy or stressful task. Some participants walked beforehand, but all had access to a chocolate bowl.

The researchers found that those who exercised before working ate on average about half as much chocolate as those who didn’t exercise. And the difficulty of the task didn’t affect the amount of chocolate eaten, suggesting that stress wasn’t a factor in the participants’ craving.

So if you have a sweet tooth at work, short breaks just might help you walk straight past the candy jar.
