Starving Student: Shubert's offers 'all the things that ice cream should be'
CHICO — I ate enough Chinese food to stuff a Mongol horde Tuesday night, but I still had a column to write, so I grudgingly agreed to order a double scoop of ice cream and call it a day.
When I waddled into Shubert's Ice Cream and Candy shop full from roughly five-pounds of fried noodles, I saw that the place had been overhauled since I last visited. Three-foot candy canes stood next to presents wreathed in Christmas tree lights and nutcrackers.
Christmas ornaments hung above them in festive shades of green, red, blue and silver.
I had been to Shubert's a few times before, but it wasn't until I walked in that I noticed the smell strong of peppermint that permeates the place.
Our server, Aly, has been working at Shubert's for about five years, and says the smell of peppermint fills the store 365 days a year. She doesn't even notice it anymore.
"It just smells like work," Aly said.
