Bob Dolan readily admits he could have erected his exterior Christmas decorations on a more delightful morning.
"We always pick the crappiest day," he said. "When it's nice, we're doing something else."
On Thanksgiving, for instance, when the high temperature hit 73, he and family members went turkey hunting instead.
So yesterday found Dolan and son Josh bundled against a blustery north wind and near freezing temperatures in their south Salina front yard assembling a red plywood sleigh. Already the duo had installed eight giant candy canes, fashioned from 3- and 2-inch PVC pipe.
Dolan, owner of BMK Plumbing and Solar of the Midwest, didn't have to wander far afield to find the raw materials for the candy canes.
Some years ago, he was pricing commercial candy canes when inspiration struck.
"I could make them for nothing," he said.
The naked canes eventually would be dressed in ribbon and appear more candy-canish and less like plumbing supplies.
