From Terrell Owens’ contract demands to Jim Johnson’s death to Michael Vick’s signing — and a lot in between, the Eagles have fallen from a perennial Super Bowl contender to a team getting 2½ points in the spread at home against Carolina.
How did it all happen?
Where did Andy Reid’s grand plan to win the first Super Bowl in franchise history, and then another, take a wrong turn, leaving the Eagles’ perpetually teased fans bitter, frustrated and — worse than angry — a bit apathetic?
There was Owens, Johnson, Vick, some bad drafts mixed in with some Jeff Garcia magic and a crazy day at the end of the 2008 season, and before you knew it, a team that averaged just under 12 wins per season from 2000-2004 is 11-18 in its last 29 games.
Let’s start with the offseason after the Super Bowl run in 2004. That’s when it all began to crumble.
Owens, the big-play threat the team badly needed, realized the long-term contract he signed was in reality a two-year deal that didn’t pay him nearly what the other top wide receivers in the league were getting. He had been warned by the NFLPA that it was a bad contract, but he trusted that Eagles management would treat him right, especially when he performed at his best.

Among the candidates who McKenzie has reportedly either talked to or plans to talk to include Miami interim coach (since replaced by Joe Philbin) Todd Bowles, Denver defensive coordinator Dennis Allen, Philadelphia assistant head coach and offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and Chicago offensive coordinator Mike Tice.
Eight scouts made the trip to Mobile to evaluate talent, McKenzie said. He said he is still evaluating the current staff and “I’m not in a hurry to hire and fire, at all.’’
Current coaches, those under contract and those whose contracts have expired, will be retained or dismissed at the discretion of the new head coach, McKenzie said....
