Children go back to basics this Christmas with cake tins on their wish list

Supermarkets Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, Asda and Morrisons have all reported the show having an effect on sales of baking ingredients and decorations as well as cookware.

Sainsbury’s, which sells its own The Great British Bake Off line, said cooling racks had done the best, up 172 per cent, while tart tins saw a rise of 77 per cent on last year, with children keen to try their hand at it after the show’s episode on tart making.

Their children’s baking books are also up 32 per cent this year.

Marks and Spencer said its pre-prepared baking mixes were up 74 percent, while children’s television character Percy Pig cupcake mix is one of its best selling items.

“It seems that it is parents doing the buying of baking accessories and pretty display plates and stands, but the message we are getting from our personal shoppers is that they are purchasing for their children for Christmas,” said Elena Antoniou, Debenhams spokesman.

Junior MasterChef Sweet And Savoury Cooking Set £10 @ John ...

John Lewis have reduced the Junior MasterChef Sweet and Savoury Cooking set from £35 to £17.50 and now to £10.

Cook up a mini storm

Before Christmas I spent ages perusing different brand of kitchen tool toys for my daughter, and was quite surprised by the value – or lack there of – provided by some of them. This set from John Lewis looks like quite good value for money, actually, especially at just £10.

The Junior MasterChef Sweet and Savoury Cooking set consists of a mixing bowl, whisk, mixing spoon, grater, four ramekins and four mini pie dishes.

One of the reviewers left a pretty concise opinion on each item, so I’ll share that with you, spelling mistakes and all!

“I purchased this item in the JL clearance, so I got a very cheap deal. I actually wanted the ramkins and small black dishes, and it worked out cheaper to by this product. The dishes are adult size and not really junior. The bowl, spoon and grater are quite stirdy, albeit on the small side (I think that is where the junior bit comes in). The whisk is a bit floppy and could end up bending. Overall the quality is a lot better than what I expected. It would be ideal for mums and dads to buy for there budding young chefs in the house, especially if you don't want the kids damaging the more expensive cookware. I did only buy it for the ramkins, which I'm very, very happy with.

Food processors: magic mixing

Top cooks say it’s all down to paddle power, but personally, I’d want a food mixer to cut the mustard on the counter, design-wise. And mix bix, chop suet and shred bread. I once, on impulse, bought a fancy Bosch food processor, but the attachments took up an entire deep drawer in the kitchen and I could never beat the child-proof safety catch.

After it had gathered dust for a year, I gave it away and replaced it with a Roberts radio. It might not be so hot at making pastry, but at least I use it every day.

As Delia says in her sensible Delia Online equipment guide , if you have to keep a gadget in a cupboard, the chances are you’ll never get around to dragging it out. So if a food mixer is going to be on show, it has to look good as well as doing the business.

Then I saw the Assistent (yes, that’s how it’s spelt) Original. At £795, it’s almost twice the price (online price, from John Lewis), but this Swedish-made mixer is a chunky charmer. This deluxe version can whisk, beat, blend, strain, grate and make four types of pasta, none of which I ever plan to do.
