My Bay Area Weekend! | The Oakland Berkeley Journal

Last weekend I made a point of getting out and enjoying my community.  Friday morning I headed to Brown Sugar restaurant, a cute soul food eatery on Mandela Parkway in West Oakland operated by chef  proprietor, Tanya Holland. I had a “screaming”, (that means unbelievable, over the top) piece of brown sugar peach coffee cake, a fantastic latte and I loved the corn waffles with brown sugar butter.  (I suggest you upgrade to the real maple syrup.)  I absolutely love the upscale diner decor with mounted photography of Oakland.  Brown Sugar Kitchen is open for breakfast and lunch Tuesday – Sunday.  Check out Brown Sugar Kitchen online, brownsugarkitchen.com .

Saturday, St. George Spirits in Alameda had their bi-annual open house.  Here fans of fine spirits were able to learn how this boutique distillery handcrafts their small batches of the best Eau de Vie, Hangar One fruit infused vodka, absinthe, whiskey and more.  With live music, snacks and bartenders everywhere mixing up fresh liquid concoctions, this was the best party along the Bay.  Visit St. George Spirits online, St.GeorgeSpirits.com ....

Chronicle Review: 2 1/2 stars! - Oakland Chop Bar

Congrats on the review Chop Bar!!!!

My family concurs with this reviewer, with one “little” acceptation … your Kids Menu needs some major work.

We have had both the Mac’n'Cheese and the Chicken Fingers several times [eat in & take out] and all have been huge disappointments, they come a la carte so for $5 your get a small bowl of plain mac with some cheese and milk mixed in [if you are cooking to order a béchamel based cheese sauce would be much more appealing for the kiddies] or there are the chicken tenders, that every time were dry, flavorless and burt on one side, with no sauce [ketchup is always offered] and that is it… no veggi, no fries, nothing, just two lone tenders or small serving of mac on an otherwise empty plate …

We totally get that you are not a “family” joint but this falls way short in so many categories; portion size, nutrition, presentation, flavor, food value etc. especially when compared to Chop Bars regular menu offerings. I share this with you all in the interests of this being a constructive critique.
