Something for everyone in BDAC holiday art show

Christmas can have a dozen different flavors Р elegant, cheerful, whimsical, homespun and plenty more.

At the Bountiful/Davis Art Center’s Holiday Art Show and Sale, running now through Dec. 22, there’s art for every seasonal flavor. This is the last exhibit in the center’s current building, and the results have the same mixed-bag feel of a holiday potluck.

There are only a handful of traditional Christmas pieces, but they’re all gems. Cary Henrie’s “Prayer” offers a beautiful winged angel bathed in golden light, the look on her face both gentle and wise. Robert McKay, whose Christmas contribution generally focuses on Santa Claus, makes this year’s St. Nick look both impish and sweet in “To All A Goodnight.”

For those who prefer a more elegant, reflective look at the holiday, Kindra Fehr’s “Winter Light” uses bare trees and shadows to graceful, gentle effect. Simon Winegar’s “Like Mid-Day” offers a homier touch, but the expanse of night sky and reflected light offer the same restrained beauty.

My New Green Bowl — Jo's Country Junction

Out and about on my thrifting travels I came across this big, green, floral bowl.

Isn’t it LOUD?  I stood there debating whether I wanted it or not.

It it not my typical style at all.  It didn’t fit with anything I have.  I checked the price tag… 75 cents.  Oh, what the heck…I’ll buy it.  Driving home I started thinking about what I was going to do with it.

By the time I got home…I knew exactly what I’d do with it.

It’s my leader and ender bowl.  As I sew leader and ender pieces, they often get mixed up in other things that I am sewing.  I’ve lost a piece or two and hopefully my bowl is going to make it just a bit easier.  My current project is a Moda Bake Shop quilt.  I’m busy sewing blocks together.  As I get done sewing a row, I run two pieces of my My Blue Heaven quilt (done in red) through the machine then clip my row off.  When I come back to the machine, the two pieces I ran through the machine are still there.  I run my new blocks through the machine, clip off the My Blue Heaven pieces and toss them in the bowl....

How to Make Your Own Starch for Starching Fabric

Although buying spray starch from the grocery store will not put that much of a dent in your wallet, it is still more economical to make your own. With a few items that you may already have in your home, you can iron your dress pants, shirts and even quilt fabrics to a crisp, wrinkle-free state. Innovate Us suggests that starch can also repel some stubborn stains such as sweat and dirt that sticks to the starch and not the actual fabric, possibly prolonging the use of the clothing item. Washing the fabric removes the starch.

Starch can attract bugs and insects, so when storing fabrics or clothing, ensure that the item is free of starch.

To remove starch buildup from your iron, dampen a soft cloth with vinegar and iron the cloth with the hot iron, or consider using a cleaning sponge such as Mr. Clean Magic Eraser on the iron. When ironing vinegar, fumes will be released into the air.

Martha Stewart suggests that making a solution of 2 tbsp. cornstarch with...
